USPNet serving the local community after Tropical Cyclone Pam

27 Mar. 2015

By Adrian Bule, Emalus ITS Support Assistant

A day before Tropical Cyclone Pam (Thursday, March 12), all GSM communications to Malekula went down, including local carriers TVL and Digicel and the Vanuatu eGov network. There was no communication to the outside world except for USPNet.  People were desperate to contact families in Port Vila, Santo, New Caledonia and to find out any news regarding Tropical Cyclone Pam.

I was approached by staff members from many institutions and individuals: TVET, the Department of Agriculture, the National Bank of Vanuatu, Malampa provincial authorities, Norsup hospital, the Lakatoro Public Works Department, tourists, the Police and also other community members. All of them really needed to contact their families and friends via Facebook and email. I also provided Skype communications to National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) authorities in Port Vila. USPNet facilities at USP Malampa became the hub of communications to the outside world after Tropical Cyclone Pam.

Below are some photos.
