Orientation and Counselling - Faculty of Business and Economics

Welcome Address by Acting Dean: Dr. Kesaia Seniloli

A very warm welcome to all new students joining the Faculty of Business and Economics (FBE) this year. You have made the right choice to pursue your degree at FBE. FBE is the largest and the most dynamic of all USP faculties. It comprises eight schools; the School of Accounting and Finance; The School of Agriculture, the School of Economics, the School of Government, Development and International Affairs; School of Land Management and Development; School of Management and Public Administration; School of Tourism and Hospitality Management.

University experience is different from the one you experienced in secondary school. The University is a place for rigorous intellectual work, for inquiry, and to appreciate alternate points of view. You are expected to acquire knowledge and skills in your field of study, but also to grow as a person.

University is about being independent. You will be expected to organize and manage your time. You will not have teachers chasing after you to hand in homework or assignments. You therefore need to be organized and to manage your time properly to avoid missing out on classes, leaving everything until the last minute, not meeting deadlines or doing the bare minimum.

Although going to university seems like a big, exciting and challenging step, it isn’t all about studying. The university is filled with events, chances to meet people from different countries from the region and the world and further engage in many fun activities. FBE organizes inter-school debates and clubs such as the USP Economics Association, the Tourism and Hospitality Student Association and the Accounting students Association. There are sports and music clubs as well. It is crucial that you find a balance between academic life and the social side of university in order to get the most out of your experience at USP!
