Preliminary, foundation, and some certificate courses have a three-letter/two-letter code. In these codes, the third letter represents the programme level (ie P = Preliminary, F = Foundation and C = Certificate). For example, GEP02 is a preliminary course, GEF02 is a foundation course and HUC11 is a certificate course. Degree-level undergraduate courses and postgraduate courses have a two-letter/three-number code. For example, AG350 is a degree course.

Course Code Letters:

All USP courses are identified by a two- or three-letter prefix. These code letters represent either a focused area of study (such as BI for biology, ED for education, or SO for sociology). A list of all study area prefixes and the section of the university that teaches them appears below.

Course Code Numbers

First Digit: first year courses of a Degree program are referred to as 100-level courses, second year courses as 200-level courses, and third year courses as 300-level courses. Postgraduate courses for a Diploma or Masters degree are 400-level courses. Thus the first digit of a USP course code reflects the level of the course. For example, AG350 is a 300-level agriculture course.

Second (or Middle) Digit: the second digit of a course code denotes the sub-discipline within which a course is taught, refer to table (right). For example, the agriculture course, AG350, is taught within the sub-discipline 'Agriculture Extension'.

Last Digit: the last digit of a course code simply denotes the course's position in a sequence of courses taught at that level, within the subdiscipline. For example, AG350 is the first course in a sequence of 300-level courses taught within the Agriculture Extension subdiscipline.

Certificate and Diploma Course Numbers: courses for the undergraduate Certificates and undergraduate Diplomas are denoted by a three-letter code and a two-digit number. The Certificate courses have 'C' and the Diploma courses have 'D' as the last letter of the three-letter code.

Preliminary Course Numbers: courses where 'P' is the last character of the three-letter code denotes a course at the Preliminary level.

Foundation Course Numbers: courses at the Foundation level have 'F' as the last character of the three-letter code.
