About the Faculty - Faculty of Arts and Law
The vision of the Faculty of Arts, Law and Education is three-fold. The Faculty strives to;
- be an internationally recognised centre for the undertaking of teaching, research, publication, consultancy and community services;
- achieve academic excellence through offering quality programmes in diverse areas of the humanities, social sciences, education, law, Pacific languages, literature, media, arts and cultures; and,
- provide relevant and sustained focus on the Pacific region.
To achieve its vision the Faculty of Arts, Law and Education will;
- provide learning and teaching of the highest possible quality which is ‘student-centred’ and which adequately prepares students from highly diverse backgrounds for the workplace, lifelong learning, community engagement, life and service;
- develop and deliver programmes and courses of study:
- which are relevant to meet the needs of member countries of the University
- which fulfil the developmental needs of the students within particular disciplines
- which are of the best standard and quality of curriculum and planning, and which are focused on the Pacific environment and context
- which are significantly flexible and accessible, use blended modes of study and effectively cater for both undergraduate and post-graduate study
- which are a possible source of additional revenue to the Faculty;
- conduct research with a collaborative focus; form cluster research groups, particularly between units in the Faculty and with other disciplines and Faculties within the University, secure research funds; seek international collaborative research opportunities;
- develop and maintain an international profile in the areas of academic publications and consultancy; and,
- enhance its role in community, national, regional and global engagements, services and support.
The Faculty of Arts, Law and Education will continue to strengthen its link and presence in regional campuses in a number of ways;
- strengthening its face-to-face delivery of programmes, courses and tutorials;
- continued commitment to distance and flexible learning using blended approaches of delivery;
- offering courses and programmes of study to cohorts of students based on identified needs of the country;
- collaborative marketing outreach to students and community with campus staff;
- enhancing the research capacity of staff in campuses with the disciplines of the Faculty; and,
- conducting relevant research that responds to countries’ specific needs.
The Faculty is committed, in respect of all areas of its undertaking, to the following general values, both ethical and intellectual.
- It is appropriate that the Pacific context be recognised in all areas of the Faculty’s academic undertaking in order both to promote the study and understanding of the Pacific region as an end in itself and in order to promote knowledge of the Pacific region and Pacific culture internationally;
- Academic excellence is to be judged by reference to a complexity of factors such as international standards, student demand, student satisfaction and performance and peer review, rather than any one or a limited grouping of these;
- Proper administrative support is required to support academic programmes;
- The Faculty should function, amongst other things, as a viable economic unit which is able to meet financial targets imposed on it;
- Efficient and effective administrative support is essential to the general functioning of the Faculty;
- Clear lines of executive and administrative authority should be established and publicized and proper channels of communication provided;
- Autonomy of academic staff should be observed, although tempered by factors such as the need for collaboration and cooperation in area of key Faculty endeavour, the need to provide clear direction to the Faculty’s undertaking, the pursuit of common Faculty plans, goals and targets and the proper exercise of executive authority for the Faculty;
- Staff should be provided with appropriate opportunities for career development, promotion and advancement;
- Academic staff duties, responsibilities, workloads and performance assessment should be adjusted and acknowledged to reflect the diverse needs of the Faculty in area of teaching, research and consultancy;
- A supportive and encouraging working environment based on principles which are fair and just is essential to the achievement of high levels of performance and productivity;
- All staff should be committed to the highest standards of professional and academic conduct in all areas of responsibility;
- The highest standards of probity and ethical conduct should be maintained by all staff in all areas of performance and in line with relevant university wide policies where relevant;
- Continuing review of Faculty performance is essential, especially in the context of a new and rapidly evolving structure;
- New Faculty initiatives should be diligently assessed having regard to the purposes and feasibility of the relevant initiative, the availability of resources – human, financial and otherwise – and the ability of the Faculty as a whole to support any such initiative.
