Attendance Policy

Purpose of Paper

To propose the sanctions for non-compliance with the Senate –approved policy on minimum tutorial attendance requirements.

Background

In April, Senate approved a policy requiring 70% attendance at tutorials and laboratories by all students learning in F2F mode and in other course delivery modes, as feasible.

Recommendations

Recognising the correlation between attendance at tutorials and overall student performance, it is recommended that:

  1. Students who fail to meet the minimum attendance requirement of 70% of tutorials and/or lab sessions be penalised 2% of their total coursework grade for each 10% short of the minimum, e.g. students who attend between 60 and 69% of their labs or tutorials are penalised 2% of their, typically 60%, coursework component. Students who attend between 40 and 49% of their labs or tutorials are penalised 6% of their, typically 60%, coursework component etc.
  2. Non-compliance with the minimum attendance policy on laboratory and tutorial attendance accrues penalties on each cumulatively.
  3. Students with valid extenuating circumstances for non-compliance require the approval of the Head of School to qualify for exemption from this policy.
  4. This policy to take effect from the beginning of Semester 2, 2011.
