Literary Arts and Film

2011 is the first year that The Oceania Centre has had a coordinated program focusing on the Literary Arts and Film, with the appointment of a full-time Literary Arts and Film Assistant.  Our two regular offerings are the monthly film nights for USP staff and students, curated by Professor Vilsoni Hereniko, and the Blood In The Kava Bowl series of spoken word and cross art-form collaboration events happening on the first Friday of every month.

In addition, the Oceania Centre for Arts, Culture and Pacific Studies will offer a range of workshops and one-off events throughout 2011, including a production of the play "Fine Dancing", written by Vilsoni Hereniko, which he will also direct.

The association of The Oceania Centre with the Literary Arts goes back to its establishment in 1998.  The founding Director of The Centre, Professor Epeli Hau'ofa, was a well established writer of fiction and poetry, many artists who have spent time under The Centre's roof have, amongst their many talents, been writers, and The Centre has played host to many workshops, readings and other events based in the Literary Arts.

The focus of our Literary Arts and Film programs is to develop a strong Pacific consciousness amongst the USP community, whilst also providing for the development of Pacific artists and their art forms.
