Welcome to PACE-SD

The “Pacific Centre for Environment and Sustainable Development” (PACE-SD; PACE for short) was born from USP’s 1999 Strategic Plan and the collective thinking of the USP Advisory Group on Environment (AGE). PACE-SD has established itself as a Centre of Excellence for Environmental Education and Research in the Pacific Island Region.

Since its inception, PACE-SD has been a leader in a variety of Pacific environmental issues.  The Centre is designed to work with relevant partners across the university, regional and international environmental organizations, regional governments and NGOs to promote environmentally sustainable development.

The Pacific region and the individual Island nations have made a strong commitment to international efforts to prevent further irreversible environmental change and to promote sustainable development by becoming party to numerous international “Multilateral Environmental Agreements”. PACE-SD is a partner in making those commitments a reality.

PACE-SD's commitment is

• To strengthen human and technical capacity for climate change, environmental, renewable energy and sustainable development challenges throughout the region.

To build partnerships from individuals and communities partnerships to national and international partnerships that address climate change and sustainable development issues based on scientific understanding and principles.

To operate with honesty, transparency, respect and integrity as effective regional partners and collaborators.

• To increase the awareness of policy makers and the general public about the current resource intensive development that threatens environmentally and culturally sustainable development in the Pacific Islands.
