A non-profit organisation, the Confucius Institute at USP is offering various levels of Chinese (Standard Chinese) courses in 2013, and will respond to different demands from individuals, businesses, schools, government departments and NGOs. If you want to open a door to the profound Chinese culture and history, to run a business with the fast developing country, or to travel, study or work in China, here is your opportunity. Different levels of credit courses (LL181/182) and social class courses are here for your selection. The social class course for beginners focuses on basic daily social communication skills of Chinese - listening and speaking. It includes pronunciation and the most practical communication tasks needed in daily life. The intermediate courses are a continuation of the beginners level. They cover a more extensive range of topics and concentrate on developing the language competence. The credit courses will not only focus on the conversational skills of Chinese, but its structure and usage. Distinctive cultural workshops, such as Tea Ceremony, Chinese Ink Painting, Chinese Song Singing, and Cooking will be organized during the semester.
Outcomes
Chinese Language I (LL181) learners will be able to:
Communicate and write in elementary Chinese;
Recognise and distinguish the various uses of Chinese in different language contexts
Chinese Language II (LL182) learners will be able to:
Communicate and write in intermediate or above level Chinese;
Understand how to summarise or paraphrase texts
Social Class (Beginner) learners will be able to:
Identify Pinyin syllables and simple characters;
Use Chinese in simple conversational dialogue.
Social Class (Intermediate I) learners will be able to:
Exchange information, ideas and opinions in basic Chinese;
Make significant gains in the acquisition of vocabulary, colloquial language and grammar.
Social Class (Intermediate II) learners will be able to:
Recognise the cross-cultural differences;
Use Chinese in some real life scenarios.
Social Class (Intermediate III) learners will be able to:
Communicate in diversified sentence patterns;
Express ideas and opinions using the grammatical rules.
A certificate indicating language levels of Chinese will be given upon your successful completion of the social class course. Excellent students will be nominated for the Chinese Bridge Competition in China, summer or winter camp scholarship to visit China.

Beginners Course
Venue: USP Laucala Campus; Course length: 17 weeks;
Fee: FJD$200; Time: Monday 10am 12pm, Tuesday 6pm-8pm, Friday 10am 12pm, and Saturday Cluster Hour: 3pm-5pm, Class start from 27 July to 22 November 2013.
Intermediate I Course
Venue: USP Laucala Campus; Course length: 17 weeks; Fee: FJD$200; Time: Wednesday 10am-12pm, Thursday 6pm -8pm, and Saturday 3pm 5pm, from 27 July to 22 November 2013.
Intermediate II Course
Venue: USP Laucala Campus; Course length: 17 weeks; Fee: FJD$200; Time: Wednesday 6pm 8pm, and Friday 10am 12pm from 31 July to 22 November 2013.
Intermediate III Course
Venue: USP Laucala Campus; Course length: 17 weeks; Fee: FJD$200; Time: Wednesday 6pm 8pm from 31 July to 22 November 2013.
Applicants must have successfully completed former levels, or otherwise approved by the Teachers.

Courses will start from 1 August 2013. The course for beginners focuses on basic daily social communication skills of Chinese Language - listening and speaking. It starts with Chinese pronunciation, and includes the most practical communication tasks needed to meet the basic requirements of daily life in China. The intermediate course is a continuation of the beginners. It covers a more extensive range of topics and concentrates on developing the skills of language speaking, listening, basic reading and writing.
