Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund Scholarships

Over two decades, recipients of the prestigious SYLFF awards - known as SYLFF Fellows - have completed PG Diplomas and MA degrees in Development Studies and other social sciences. They have taken up positions in government, civil society organisations, inter-governmental organisations including UN agencies and as prominent academics in universities in Oceania. Currently there are six SYLFF fellows, 4 from Fiji, one each from Samoa and the Solomon Islands.

SYLFF awards are available to post graduate students in the social sciences and humanities as well as interdisciplinary subject areas such as Development Studies, Governance and Environmental and Marine studies. The awards  are for Post Graduate Diploma, MA and PhD students and are based on academic merit. The SYLFF scholarships are advertised each year in Tukutuku, SGDIA webpage and in the Fiji print media.


SYLFF Awards are available in any social science discipline in the following three categories.

1st Category – Postgraduate Diploma
People who are eligible for entry into Postgraduate Diploma in any social science discipline. Applicants should have a GPA of 3.5 or above in 200-300 level courses completed at the undergraduate level. The duration of the scholarship is for one year of full-time study and can be extended to a Master of Arts degree upon successful completion of Postgraduate Diploma with a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

2nd Category – Masters of Arts
People who wish to pursue a Masters degree in any social science discipline. The duration of the scholarship is one year of full-time study. The award will be reviewed on a semester basis. Candidates applying should have a GPA of 3.5 or above in their 400-level courses completed at the postgraduate level.

3rd Category – PhD
People who having successfully completed their Masters degree in the social sciences and who wish to pursue PhD Studies in any social science discipline.
