The celebration of Chinese New Year and the Official Opening of “China Pavilion” in Fiji
On the 28th of January 2017, the first day of the Chinese Lunar calendar, the celebration of Chinese New Year and the official opening of “ China Pavilion” were jointly organized by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Republic of Fiji, Confucius Institute at The University of the South Pacific (below will be referred to as “CI-USP”), China Cultural Centre and the Chinese Association of Fiji at the center of Suva. Prime Minister Mr. Voreqe Bainimarama, People’s Republic of China Ambassador to Fiji H.E. Mr. Zhang Ping, Chinese Director of CI-USP Dr. Yang Hui, leaders of Chinese Association of Fiji and people from all walks of life, joined together and celebrated Chinese New Year. Prime Minister Mr. Voreqe Bainimarama delivered a keynote speech and expressed that he was happy to celebrate the Lunar New Year with the Chinese in Fiji. Mr. Bainimarama expressed how the China pavilion showcased the diversity of Fijian culture, and contributes to the original Chinese element in Fiji, which makes the Capital of Fiji more beautiful. Xinhua News Agency, Fiji Times, Fiji Sun, Fiji One and other media carried out full reports of the event.
In this event, CI-USP not only decorated the venue, but also did the official translation for the inscriptions on the two sides of China Pavilion. CI-USP have set up a special booth and prepared the cultural experiencing activities like painting of facial masks, painting of the pictures of roosters, writing of “Fu”(good fortune)and others, which made this event fulfilled with strong Chinese festival atmosphere, and allowed the Chinese New year to connect with the life of the ordinary Fijian people. At the same time, CI-USP also distributed around one thousand copies of CI leaflets, enrollment guides and introduction to Chinese New Year. When it comes to the Chinese traditional festival, CI-USP will always carry out a series of cultural activities relating to the respective festival, therefore there are more exciting activities of Chinese New Year celebration coming soon, so stay tuned!
