Program Advisory Committee meeting ended successfully
On the 11th of May 2017, Confucius Institute at The University of the South Pacific (CI-USP) held its 2017 Program Advisory Committee (PAC) meeting.12 committee members met at the FALE meeting room. Members included Dr. Akanisi Kedrayate, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Law and Education, Mr. Deng Xianfu, Director of Chinese culture center, Dr. Joan Yee, Local Director of CI-USP, Dr. Hui Yang, Chinese Director of CI-USP, Dr. Bin Sun, Course Coordinator of CI-USP, Ms. Mei Luo, Administrative assistant of CI-USP, Cui Shipeng, volunteer teacher of CI-USP, and Ms. Marie Ann Chan and Ms. Unaisi Waqanaibete, student representatives CI-USPís credit and social courses.
During the meeting, Joan Yee and Dr. Yang presented on CI-USP, courses offered, projects, activities, and future plans of Chinese language teaching and cultural activities in the four teaching points of CI-USP. They focused on the progress of 2016 and the first half year of 2017. Dr. Bin Sun presented on the most recent enrollment figures of CI-USP. Her presentation showcased a growth in enrollment figures in recent times. It was evident from these figures that the Chinese influence in Fiji is growing among the local people and there are opportunities for Chinese language teaching and showcasing the Chinese culture as well. Cui Shipeng of CI-USP shared his experiences as a volunteer teacher in Fiji, hardships faced and rewards of teaching in Fiji. Ms. Mei Luo who is the Administrative assistant of CI-USP analyzed the Chinese language social course evaluation report. Ms. Marie Ann Chan and Ms. Unaisi Waqanaibete, students of CI-USP shared their experiences of studying at CI-USP and gave suggestions from the perspective of a student. Finally, PAC members discussed on other matters regarding growth, sustainability, and improvements which could be made on the programmes offered at CI-USP.
PAC members highly praised the contributions CI-USP has made in expanding Chinese language teaching, Chinese culture awareness, as well as promoting a steadfast relationship between China and the South Pacific.
The PAC meeting is an annual meeting which greatly benefits CI-USP in ensuring that the work carried out in the Pacific is efficient and effective. Suggestions brought forward by PAC members also encourages creative methods of teaching which are better suited for students here in the Pacific.
