Being an introduction to the rocks of the Rakiraki Volcano (Pliocene) of northeast Viti Levu Island, Fiji...
The Rakiraki Volcano, like many of the larger volcanoes of the Mio-Pliocene Mba Volcanic Group in northern Viti Levu, started life as an undersea volcano and only later evolved into a more subaerial edifice. This may be demonstrated through the mapping and chemical investigation of the volcanic and associated volcaniclastic facies. The major and trace element geochemistry provides evidence of a shift from initially shoshonitic to later calc-alkaline/tholeiitic volcanism.
The Rakiraki Volcano is associated with minor epithermal gold mineralisation.
