Vice-Chancellorís message - USP Alumni Network

Message from Professor Rajesh Chandra, Vice-Chancellor and President of The University of the South Pacific

I warmly invite you to be part of The University of the South Pacific Alumni Network.

Our alumni are an integral part of the USP community.  The University wishes to connect with its alumni. The Alumni Network will enable us to strengthen and expand communication and partnerships both in the region and internationally. We encourage our valued alumni to engage with the University by sharing their ideas with us regarding the future direction of USP, assisting us in realizing our Vision and Mission, and foster a meaningful and lifelong mutually beneficial relationship.

USP has a diverse group of over 32,000 alumni, many of whom have become prominent personalities and leaders in government and public institutions, private sector, academia, and various other professional fields throughout the Pacific Region and across the globe. We are committed to producing graduates such as yourselves, with outstanding leadership abilities, sense of purpose, intellectual capacity, and a commitment to the development of the region.

From its humble beginnings in 1968, USP has expanded, improved, and established itself as the premier higher education institution in the Pacific region. Over the years, the University has undergone fundamental changes. Our academic programmes and student services have continuously improved. We pride ourselves in providing high quality education and state-of-the-art facilities, including the most advanced ICT Centre in the region. One thing that has not changed, and will never change, is the uniquely Pacific nature of the University, and the core shared values that identify all of us as Pacific Islanders.

USP has started an exciting journey to excellence, guided by its new Strategic Plan 2013-2018. This Plan will guide our activities to strengthen learning, teaching, and research, and outlines employee development initiatives, gives focus to continued investment in ICT, and fully embeds leadership, strong ethics and a results-based orientation to everything we do. This will lead to excellent standards across academic areas, improved and more impactful research, and greater involvement in projects and communities across the region. I strongly urge you to read the Strategic Plan 2013-2018 which is on our website.

USP has many stakeholders, and all of them have a role to play in the new Strategic Planís implementation including you, our valued alumni. The new Plan aims to create USP as a university of excellence by its 50th anniversary in 2018. By then, the region should celebrate the achievements of an institution that gives its students, alumni, leaders, and stakeholders genuine and heightened pride. We also look forward to having our alumni become  a large part of this celebration.

One of the aims of USP is to establish a regional "think tank" of experts on all matters "Pacific". This informal network of intellectuals and experts in practice is taking shape as our alumni numbers continue to grow. We are proud of our alumni, their achievements, and contributions they make in their respective professions, countries, and in the region.

You have worked hard and graduated from USP. Memories of those student days will stay with you forever. The Pacific is unique in the sense that you will certainly meet your classmates again, either professionally or in the community. This informal networking will be of great assistance to you in your career.

In the near future we will organize various events and activities, enabling you to connect personally and professionally with fellow alumni from different countries, graduation years and fields of study. I urge you to stay connected with your Alma Mater and join us as an active member of the USP Alumni Network.

Our Alumni e-newsletter will detail all forthcoming events and we encourage you all to participate and contribute. I look forward to seeing you at respective alumni gatherings around the region and beyond in the future.
