At 9.00am on Monday, 15 September 2008, a team of 61 Geography (GEF01) students and 4 staff members (Mrs. Merle Takinana, Mr. Vili Qiokata, Mrs. Grace Tui and Semi Duaibe) of the College of Foundation studies set off from USP main campus in what is to be known as the first major research field trip exercise ever to be undertaken by the College of Foundation Studies.
The field trip was for three days and the students and staff travelled more than half way across Viti Levu Island to carry out discovery learning exercises in the field. The students were to cover field work on their topics of study in Agriculture (Navua), Tourism (Denarau), Urbanisation and Town Models (Vatukoula, Tavua, Ba), Urban Zonation ( Lautoka Wharf), and Industrialization (Lautoka).
The photos provided are evidence of the fun of learning in what is known as the Geographers Laboratory. It is my hope that what you will witness will be the first of many safe and enjoyable field trips for our Foundation Students in the years to come.
Acknowledgements and thanks to Emily Pouvalu (the Director of CFS) for her consideration and consent; Pradeep Prakash, for all the financial preparations; the Islands Busses Company and drivers for the wonderful journey; the Yasawa Ladies for the wonderful meals, the Coronation Church Committee for the accommodation provided and all the parents for their confidence and trust in letting their young ones out on this long journey.
More than ever I must thank our Lord, Jesus Christ, for such a wonderful experience of teaching and learning, and for keeping us safe throughout our journey. Once again a big vinaka vakalevu and thank you.

Subject Coordinator for Geography
