A Campus GIS is a centralised information management system employed by a university to manage spatial and non-spatial data on its facilities. The system comprises hardware, software and data that allow staff, students and visitors to search, collect, share, query and analyse information for operational, administrative or academic purposes. Over the last decade, Campus GIS (each with different functionalities and interfaces) have been increasingly used by universities worldwide to manage their data and to provide freely accessible, web-based interactive campus maps. In October 2010, the Property and Facilities section of the Planning and Quality Office at The University of the South Pacific began a campus-wide mapping project in collaboration with the School of Geography, Earth Science and Environment with the aim of building a Campus GIS for the University’s Laucala Campus to manage the campus’s assets and botanical collections, and to meet the growing demands of the administration, and staff, students and visitors for spatial data. Mapping of the Laucala Campus has very recently been completed and an early version of the web-map application has been put online for viewing through the University’s intranet. The aim of this presentation is to show the value of this tool for staff, students and visitors by demonstrating the web-map application and discussing some of the expected uses of the technology.
