Real-time GNSS seismology as a tool for tsunami early warning systems

Mattia Crespi, Gabriele Colosimo, Augusto Mazzoni

Time: 11-12 noon

Venue: M107 Lecture Theatre, Marine Campus

The seminar summarizes the state of the art of the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS, at present, mainly GPS and Glonass) contribution to Seismology, and presents an innovative methodology, VADASE, invented and implemented by the authors, that enables accurate estimation of co-seismic displacement waveforms in real-time using standard broadcast products and high-rate carrier-phase observations collected by a unique GNSS receiver. The effectiveness of VADASE was demonstrated considering GPS data collected during several earthquakes, among which the great Tohoku-Oki earthquake (Japan, 2011) and, more recently, the Emilia-Romagna earthquake (Italy, 2012). This represents a potential enhancement to GNSS Seismology and an effective support for tsunami early warning systems.

VADASE was awarded the DLR (German Space Agency) Special Topic Prize and First Audience Award (the most voted idea among 105 presented) in the European Satellite Navigation Competition 2010, and recently it was included in the European Satellite Navigation Competition Success Stories.
