Akka Rimon

What is your home country?
Kiribati.

What programme did you graduate in and in which year?
Bachelor of Arts Degree with double major in Journalism and History Politics, 2003.

What was your most memorable moment as a student?
Nothing beats the race against assignment deadlines. This was the epic of my student life. It taught me much of what to expect in the real world of work that awaits me after university.

What is your current job?
Deputy Secretary for Foreign Affairs in Kiribati.

How has your USP qualification helped you in your career?
My training at USP was truly symbolic in preparing and equipping me well to my career in Government. Of course it was difficult to link every classroom theory learnt to real work situations but come to think of it, it is the entire package that came with the training that built my confidence, skills and knowledge, perseverance and life-long learning.

After graduating from USP, what were some of the highlights of your career?
i) Being an agent of change and development in Kiribati. Having worked at five ministries since I began my career in Government in 2004, gives me a sense of fulfillment that I had touched peopleís lives (I have worked at the Presidentís Office, Ministry of Communications, Transport & Tourism, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Labour & Human Resource Development and just recently the Ministry of Foreign Affairs),
ii) Completing my Master of Public Administration from the University of Sydney in 2009;
iii) Maintaining a work-life balance. As a career woman and a mother of two girls, my professional development has also taught me a lot about
balancing work-life priorities.

Your advice to current and future USP students?
Never stop believing in yourself. Indulge in the beauty of your dreams because it's dreams and imagination that propels you closer to your goals.
