University Sports of Samoa Tournament

On the 27th April 2013 the University Sports of Samoa Association ran a sports tournament for University students in Samoa.  Sports held during the tournament were 10 aside Rugby and Mixed Netball between USP, NUS and OUM teams with an inaugural Women’s exhibition Rugby game also part of the tournament.  The tournament was hosted by NUS on their Rugby field and in the Gymnasium with approximately 150 students from across the Universities taking part.  This is the 3rd tournament of this kind and plans are in place to hold another event in the second semester of 2013 including other sports to encourage participation and involvement by all University students in Samoa.

University Sports of Samoa were pleased to host Donna Spethman the National Programs Manager from Australian University Sport, for this event.  Ms Spethman gave the keynote address during the opening ceremony for the tournament, encouraging students to enjoy themselves and remember the importance of balancing a healthy lifestyle with their academic commitments.  During the tournament Ms Spethman commented that she was impressed with the calibre of sports played in Samoa and is looking forward to hosting the Samoan Universities Netball team shortly to travel to Australia for the Northern University Games being held in Brisbane in July.

6 teams played in the Netball competition.  Three teams from NUS, two from USP and one from OUM.  Games were played in 2 pools with play offs for 3rd/4th place and a Final.  Pool matches and the final game were closely contested with the USP Green team winning the competition by 1 goal in the dying seconds of the game.  NUS teams took out the 2nd and 3rd placings with USP Blue coming in 4th.

The 10 aside Rugby competition was played in a round robin format with five teams entered.  Two from each of NUS and USP and one team from OUM.  The rugby tournament this year was dominated by the USP teams who took out 1st and 2nd place in the competition followed by NUS in 3rd.

During the tournament other prizes were up for grabs for the supporters. USP students were out in force and took away prizes for the best banners and cheerleading.  The OUM Netball team won the prize for the Best Dressed.

Prizes were also awarded to best Male and Female players in both sports with Tovale Solinuu (NUS) winning the best Female netball player and Nicodemus Palamo (USP) winning the best Male netball player prizes.

The University Sports of Samoa Association looks forward to the next tournament and continuing to promote healthy lifestyles through its vision “To develop the performance and involvement of University students in sport locally and internationally”.
