Title of Research Seminar :
Consuming Nature: Perspectives from the Pacific
Abstract of Research Seminar
My research broadly aims at understanding environmental perceptions among Pacific Islanders. The Pacific is especially impacted by changes in global climate and environmental degradation. Therefore it is very important to understand how locals (and not just Western consumers, corporations and governments) perceive such changes and the environment in general. Social marketing programs and policy responses are dependent on the collaboration of local individuals. For such programs and policy tools to work we need to understand how locals view environmental issues. The background of this research lies in the area of green marketing, sustainability and environmental research. The key questions are the following: How do consumers in the Pacific (especially within subsistence marketplaces) view and engage nature? How do Pacific islanders perceive environmental issues? What are the perceptions of Climate Change, its effects and possibilities for adaptation?
