Jagdishwar Singh

Dr Singh is originally from Fiji but currently lives in Melbourne, Australia. He has graduated twice from the University of South Pacific - with Gold Medals on both occasions - for his BA (1977) and MA (1988) degrees. Subsequently, he completed his PhD from Deakin University (Australia) under an Australian national scholarship. Dr Singh also holds other post-graduate qualifications in Economics, Business Administration, and Industrial Relations. He is also a former Tate & Lyle Cambridge University Scholar and has been the recipient of numerous other awards and fellowships.

Currently, he is the General Manager of the Confederation of Postgraduate Medical Education Councils (CPMEC), the peak body for prevocational medical education and training in Australasia. Some of the key achievements during his tenure have been the development and implementation of the Australian Curriculum Framework for Junior Doctors (ACF), the Prevocational Medical Accreditation Framework (PMAF), and the design, development and national implementation of CPMEC’s Professional Development Program for Registrars (PDPR) and its accompanying Trainer Accreditation Program. Dr Singh has coordinated numerous submissions on behalf of CPMEC and Postgraduate Medical Councils on a wide range of issues impacting on prevocational medical education and training in Australia and New Zealand. He is also the national convenor of the Australian Junior Medical Officers’ and Australian Directors’ of Clinical Training Committees and represents CPMEC on numerous national medical education and training committees. 

Prior to this role Dr Singh had accumulated over twenty-five years of experience in educational leadership and executive management. He has made an extensive contribution to the development, design and delivery of management and leadership training programs for middle to senior executives throughout the Asia - Pacific region. Literally thousands of managers have benefitted from the programs that he has facilitated. He still travels to Fiji annually to run a flagship Management Leadership Development Program that he began in 1984 with the Fiji National Training Council. Dr Singh has also held senior management roles with Monash Mt Eliza Business School, Fiji Hotels Association, and the-then Fiji National Training Council. He has also undertaken consultancy assignments for the International Labour Organisation, the UNDP, and the Asian Productivity Organisation in the past.

His particular passion is facilitating individuals to develop their capacity to perform more effectively in their various roles within organisations and as community leaders. This has given him the opportunity to work with diverse groups of professionals across many cultures. 

His USP experiences
“I have very pleasant memories of my experiences at the USP. My initial academic grounding at USP has allowed me to operate successfully in all parts of the world. Apart from my academic achievements, I was also actively involved in student political leadership with USPSA, sports through the USP soccer club, and numerous other university activities. There were lifetime friendships and partnerships forged that remain strong today. Those experiences also provided valuable learning and lessons to help shape future experiences.”

Involvement with USP since Graduation
"Since graduation, my only major involvement with the USP has been as a Consultant Lecturer in the early days of the MBA program." 

Advice to USP Students
“One must be cautious about dispensing advice freely without fully appreciating the contextual circumstances that face today’s USP students are different. However, some things have worked for me over the years across many roles that you may find useful. This include a very strong sense of self-belief in one’s abilities that is backed up by a track record of achievements; developing resilience to deal with the inevitable adversities; being focused to deal with the numerous distractions that characterise contemporary life; being generally open to new experiences; and considering alternative and innovative ways of dealing with problems. All this has to be underpinned by an orientation that embraces continuous self-development and learning.”

Some Tips (that have worked for me!):
“1. Have a good awareness of your personal strengths and limitations as well as the situations you are addressing.

2. A willingness to be flexible and respond to new opportunities that may arise (technologies are creating jobs that you may not have even heard of!)

3. Remaining focused on the key contributions you can make as a provider of solutions.”
