ACIAR-USP RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIPS - Research and Consultancy, Faculty of Science and Technology
The University of the South Pacific, in collaboration with major donor the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), offers scholarships in Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
The ACIAR-USP Postgraduate Scholarship is a program offered through the University of the South Pacific (USP) and involves the Faculty of Science, Technology and Environment (FSTE), and the Faculty of Business and Economics (FBE). Scholarships are funded by ACIAR and administered by USP.
ACIAR is an Australian government authority and forms part of Australia's international development cooperation program. ACIAR aims to enhance rural household incomes and broader economic growth by investing in international research partnerships that encourage agricultural development, sustainable use of natural resources and capacity building of benefit to partner countries and Australia.
The ACIAR Pacific Island Country strategy recognises the importance of the agricultural, fisheries, forestry and related sectors within these countries. It is committed to supporting research-and-development (R&D) and capacity building to address three main thrusts: improved food and nutritional security; integrated and sustainable management and development of agriculture, fisheries and forestry resources; and improved biosecurity and increased trade in agriculture, fisheries and forestry products
As part of this commitment to R&D capacity building, ACIAR, in partnership with USP, established the ACIAR-USP Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme in 2008. Phase 2 of the scholarships began in 2015. Students in any discipline relating to a career in the above sectors (including economics, agricultural economics and agribusiness) are eligible to apply.
Individuals awarded scholarships will be based either at the USP Samoa Alafua Campus or the Fiji Laucala Campus. Up to six scholarships will be offered in 2017 to begin in Semester 1, 2018 at USP. Of these six, two are specifically for applicants interested in pursuing a Master’s by research degree associated with an ACIAR Forestry project.
WHAT IS THE ACIAR-USP POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP?
The primary aim of the ACIAR-USP scholarship is to enhance research capacity in ACIAR’s Pacific Partner countries, namely, Fiji, Kiribati, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. This scholarship provides an opportunity for interested individuals involved to obtain a Master's by Research degree by working on research that is related to an active ACIAR Pacific project. The research work that a student undertakes should form a discrete topic related to an existing ACIAR project. Please see the ACIAR Pacific Project List for more information on active projects.
The scholarship is offered for the minimum period necessary for an individual to complete the academic requirements for a Master’s by research degree at USP. The following benefits apply:
