Tamahiki Charlene Tukiuha

Name : Tamahiki Charlene Tukiuha

Country : Niue

Programme and year graduated : Bachelor of Arts (Majoring in Sociology and Applied Psychology) in 2005

Why did you choose this field of study? Initially i had wanted to take up nursing but it didn't work out so Sociology and Applied Psychology [specializing in Counselling) was my second option. Human behaviour and personality have always interested me especially understanding the mystery behind internal and external influences, family constellation and how it contributes to shaping a person's behaviour and personality over time.

Briefly reflect on your student life at USP? Awesome, culture shock, overwhelmed, excited, forced to be responsible, independent, learn the hard way and anxious are some words that describes my student life at USP. An experience of a lifetime and literally puts meaning to 'either you sink or swim', being away from parents and having to take responsibility and make decisions and at the same time trying not to lose sight of my mission - to complete my programme and graduate'.

Greatest achievements as a student? Graduating in 2005

Career highlights since graduation? Since graduating, I've been employed by the Government of Niue for about 9 years now. I have progressed both professionally and personally and have learnt and faced many challenges but all in all these experiences have made me a better person today. Another highlight would be in 2010 when i was appointed as the chairperson of the board of directors for the Broadcasting Corporation of Niue.

Who / what do you credit your success to? What inspires you? I give credit to my heavenly father for blessing me with great, humble and supportive parents, families, friends, lecturers and tutors who were my supporting hub, my strength during my years of study, which provided me with an enabling environment to successfully complete my program and graduate. I would like to think that my experience and success will inspire others to follow their dream and in turn inspire others

How do you think USP helped you in your career? USP is unique in itself with its structure and programmes tailored specifically for the people of the Pacific. ON e can really appreciate that regardless of which USP campus / centre once studies in, it will feel just 'like a home away from home'.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years time? Eventually i would like to join the private sector but for now, I am happy where i am.

What advise would you give to current and future students of USP? I would encourage current and future students to enjoy and absorb as much as you can during your years of study because it is an experience of a lifetime. DO yourself, your family and your nation proud.
