Tabanteiti Rokoua

Name: Tabanteiti Taurabakai Rokoua

Country: Kiribati

Programme: 2008, Bachelor of Arts in Management and Public Administration and Politics

Why did you choose your field of study?
I was in middle management position for over 5 years and without a formal qualification. It was frustrating and tough to convince decision makers about my initiatives. The solution was to embark on a management degree and it has helped me.

Briefly reflect on your student life at USP?
I smile when I reflect on those nights I slept on my text books but seeing my children inspired me to keep going to class. Making new friends and meeting students made my student life very enjoyable.

Greatest achievement as a student?
Graduating from USP and also having my children complete their secondary school studies thanks to my sponsor AusAID.

Career highlights since graduation.
I worked as a HR Manager in the private sector and am very fortunate to continue in this position in the public sector.

Who / what do you credit your success to? What inspires you?
I love this question as i believe that without inspiration one cannot move forward. My dear children are my inspiration and strength. I credit my success to them.

How do you think USP helped you in your career?
The qualification i gained opened many doors. It is important though as a student to respect the bond signed with the government and your sponsor and to return home and serve.

Describe any challenges you faced as a student and how you overcame them?
Being a mother and a student was a challenge but i am grateful to my family for their support especially my father who stood my me and my children. I believe it is the Kiribati value of culture and extended family that has helped me.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
I have a passion for politics so if it is God's plan for me then I will start a career in politics.

What advise would you like to give to current and future students of USP?
Stay focused and be serious with your studies, make the most of the services available with CELT, In your studies always acknowledge God, join a christian fellowship and leave your trouble behind and focus on graduating.

What has your involvement (if any) with USP Since graduation?
I started tutoring MG 101 students at the USP Kiribati Extension Centre

Any other information you would like to share?
We Pacific Islanders are very special and unique people and we all have one thing in common - Our Ocean. Although oceans apart, cultures differ i believe we all eat the same fish that roam our ocean, our identity and our heritage. We hear incidents of USP students involved in fights and even some resulting in death. We feel for parents of students caught up in these incidents and fear for our very own. USP is where we expect students to be at peace with their studies. Let our current and future students uphold our unique pacific culture of sharing, respect and caring for one another. While bonded by the beautiful waves of our ocean, let it not engulf us during the rising sea. Instead, let us join hands together to survive while making USP a peaceful home for all.
