Changes to the Student Halls of Residence Policies
In past years students residing on campus were required to pay 598,000 vatu per academic year (299,000 vatu per semester) as their residential charges which included both the accommodation and meal services. As the payment for their meal services were incorporated in the residential charges, students were required to have their meals only at the University dining hall. Students who were not happy with the meal services provided by the dining hall operators had no option to redeem their meal payments to purchase their meals from other preferred restaurants.
Subsequent to receiving concerns from the students on the above situation, University has decided to exclude the meal services from the residential charges and will now only be invoicing students for accommodation. Therefore, students will now have the option to purchase their meals directly from the dining hall or other preferred restaurants.
Please note that in the University Calender & Handbook for this year, the residential charges still includes the meal charges. However, students are only required to pay for the accommodation portion which are as follows:
Single Quarters Small:
145,950 vatu per semester or 291,900 per academic year
216,300 vatu per semester or 432,600 per academic year
For the sponsored students, if their sponsors have paid both the accommodation and meal services to the University, Finance will reimburse the meal payment directly to the student allowing them to purchase their own meals. We will also advise the sponsors of the changes and request will also be made to the sponsors to pay the meal allowance directly to the student bank accounts in the future.
New Residential Charges
As per USP Handbook & Calender for 2015, the residential charges for the Halls of Residence per academic year has increased by 5%. This increase has been implemented to provide better accommodation services to students in terms of improved facilities, proper landscaping and hire of security officers to monitor noise disturbance to students residing on campus.
