Dr. Mesake Rawaikala Dakuidreketi is currently a Senior Lecturer in Education at the USP School of Education (SOED). He has more than 18 years of experience as an educator at Secondary School level in Fiji rising to the level of Head of Department (Science) before joining the University of the South Pacific from 1997 until to date. He holds a Diploma in Education & Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Mathematics from the University of the South Pacific, Master of Science from Waikato University and PhD in Education at Canterbury University.
Dr. Mesake has 4+ years research in Education in New Zealand and intensively researched issues in Primary and Secondary school education in Fiji particularly those surrounding the up-take of science. He has a high standard of professionalism, experience and dedication to Education particularly in the field of Research, Science Education and Community Education. He recently published a book based on his PhD thesis called: ‘Contexts of Science Teaching and Learning in Fiji Schools’. Apart from this, he is author to some book chapters, journals, and conference presentations over the years. He has also involved himself with some important Community Education Programmes. One such Programme he initiated, seek funding for and engage with the community for the past years is called the ‘PACE’ (Partners in the Advancement of Children Education) Programme which covers basic computer learning for primary and dropout school children and adult awareness programme for parents and adults. He attended various conferences in the Pacific to present his work on this Programme.
Dr. Mesakes' interests cover a variety of topics such as theories and views about what science is and the nature of scientific enquiry; macro and micro-level contexts of science teaching & learning; development of children's thinking; classroom teaching practices and interactions; beliefs about teaching and children education; behavioral, ecological and socio-cultural theory of development and learning; Orality, Literacy and Science. He is part of the committee of Editors for the journal ‘Directions: Journal of Educational Studies’.
