Biography

Alexander Trupp is a Senior Lecturer of Tourism and Hospitality in the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management. He recently joined the University of the South Pacific from Mahidol University, Thailand, where he was a lecturer at the Institute for Population and Social Research and visiting professor at the Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia. Alexander holds a PhD in Theoretical and Applied Geography from the University of Vienna, Austria, where he also worked as university assistant and lecturer at the Department of Geography and Regional Research and as part-time lecturer at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology. Furthermore, he acts as editor-in-chief of the Scopus-indexed Austrian Journal of South-East Asian Studies (ASEAS).

Alexander has extensive fieldwork experience in Southeast Asia and Europe. His research is nested in the broad fields of tourism studies and human geography and comprises modes, structures, motivations, and practices of mobilities, especially in Asian and European contexts. He has conducted qualitative and quantitative research on host-guest encounters in ethnic and cultural tourism, rural-urban migration, urban street vending, Asian outbound tourism, immigrant entrepreneurship, Asian communities abroad, and migration and natural disasters. His research and publication projects have been awarded by ENITS (Empowering Network for International Thai Studies, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand), TOSOK (Tourism Sciences Society of Korea), and the Theodor Körner Award (Austria). Alexander’s book titled, ‘Migration, Micro-Business and Tourism in Thailand: Highlanders in the City’, published by Routledge, London, will be released in 2017.
