2017 USP-LABASA CAMPUS OPEN DAY

Twenty four secondary schools from as far as Taveuni South and a total of 2000 people gathered at Subrail park to witness the 2017 USP open day.

Soliciting the engagement of the Permanent Secretary of Education Mr Iowane Tiko, as the 2017 Chief Guest was remarkable, as it had been his first invitation and also an opportunity to acknowledge the Ministry of Education who has always been a stakeholder of the university, in being a contributor of one of the highest number of studentís intake at USPís Labasa Campus.

The Chief Guest, Mr Iowane Tiko in his address highlighted the governmentís commitment in supporting childrenís education in Fiji, and this was noted again in the announcement of the 2018 budget. He also assured the studentís that the Ministry would work collaboratively with donor governments of Australia, New Zealand, China, Korea and many others in provisions of scholarships for higher tertiary studies and also more local scholarships would be available in the near future.

Particularly he acknowledged current students of USP Labasa Campus for pursuing their studies here from Vanualevu and making use of the different learning modes that are available. Prospective students again were encouraged by the Permanent Secretary to choose a programme of study that would boost their marketability in the career world, especially now that a lot of USP programmes have gained accreditations and that they were to convince their parents to aspire for tertiary studies at the University of the South Pacific and to live their dream.

Mr Tikoís remarks resonated well with the universityís open day theme which was ďShaping your FutureĒ, in allowing students, teachers, and the general public first-hand experience of the vibrancy, versatility, and Pacific consciousness of the University of the South Pacific.

Students from South Taveuni Secondary School, who boarded the boat at 2am, attended the Open Day for the first time, and they were enlightened, empowered and took back lovely memories of a vibrant event that not only gave them a fair share of fun but also ignited their dreams of higher studies and available opportunities that they can benefit from at USP. Special invites were forwarded to USPís sponsors, bankers, and important government offices who are partners of the university in Labasa to showcase their services and be part of the Open Day.

The 2017 USP Open Day at Labasa Campus was accorded a lot of acclamation from students, teachers, sponsors, and members of the public in the survey forms and thus all personnelís that have contributed to the success of this event is greatly acknowledged.
