Biography

Dr Abdul Hassan is the Acting Head of the School of Land Management and Development at the University of the South Pacific, Fiji. His doctoral thesis was on the sustainable development of low cost urban housing in Fiji. He gained Master of Arts in 2003 and investigated on the vertical inequity in the unimproved capital value rating system in Fiji. He has presented several research papers on the housing and local council rating systems in the international conferences. Dr Hassan has written a chapter of a book in 2005 titled, The Local Government Rating System in Fiji, Land Value Taxation. He has also published articles in scholarly journals.

Before joining The University of the South Pacific in 1999, Dr Hassan was employed by the Fiji Government as a professional valuer, working in the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources. While employed in the public sector he carried out an attachment duty with the Chief Valuers office in England. Currently Dr Hassan is the Chair of the Valuers Registration of Fiji and Chair of Real Estate Licensing Board of Fiji.

Besides his teaching career Dr Hassan is actively involved in the community service and helping young professionals to become competent valuers. He has presented many papers and addresses on valuation principles and practices in conferences, seminars and public meetings. He has attended several workshops on teaching and learning and engaged in writing courses on valuation subjects.
