Pacific Treasures: Breaking News!

Canned tuna and noodles are a staple diet for a good proportion of university students due to its high economical value.

The Fiji Times 8 February, 1968 p. 9; 25 January 1968 p. 13; 1 February 1968 p.7.

When The University of the South Pacific began operations in 1968, a 16 ounce can of Safcol tuna costed 42 (4 shillings and tuppence) and a packet of Maggi noodles costed 15 (1 shilling and 5 pence) and Fiji Bitter, also a local staple of university life, was sold at 1 (1 shilling) per carton or 1d (1 penny) per bottle in public bars.

The Fiji Times 31 August, 1968 p. 18 and 8.

Fast forward ten years to the year 1978 when dollars and cents replaced the pound, shillings and pence (,s,d). The student diet had not changed much and a can of Sunbell tuna flakes could be purchased at the mere price of 21 cents. Six bottles, long-neck mind you, or half a carton of Fiji Bitter, would only handicap your meagre student budget by $3.15!

The Fiji Times 31 August, 1978 p. 27 and 17 January, 1968 p. 12.

Damodar was already synonymous to the cinema business in 1968 with the Regal, Lilac and Phoenix Theatres the go-to places to watch the latest movies.

Interesting information such as the above for comparing prices and inflation can be gleaned from back issues of newspapers and in this case, The Fiji Times. Newspapers carry information on current events and serve as useful primary sources for historical research. They reflect the time period in which they were created, and provide a glimpse into society at a particular time. Newspapers are attractive to its readers as they inform, educate and entertain the public. With the advent of technology, some newspapers are available digitally or on microfilm whilst others are available only in print form.
