In recognition of the worldwide trend relating to environmental degradation, poverty and societal disintegration which needed to be addressed in the Pacific Region, USP set up the Centre for Environmental and Sustainable Development (PACE SD) in 2001. It was in an attempt to develop a coordinated response to the needs of the region in areas of sustainable development and environmental management.
The Institute of Applied Sciences (IAS), interfaces the University's expertise and facilities to the independent island countries of the South Pacific Region. In particular, as a laboratory based institute, it makes these resources available to regional organisations, governments, business, and the people of the region. The IAS is the consulting arm of the Faculty and markets the academic expertise of the teaching staff to the outside world.
The Institute of Marine Resources (IMR) supports Pacific Island Countries in the sustainable development of their marine resources to help increase the region’s capacity to sustainably develop its marine resources through applied research, training and teaching. It attempts the make the University’s marine expertise available to the region through research and consultancies.
