Academic Progress Assessment - Current Students |
Undergraduate Studies
Satisfactory Progress is defined as the achievement of a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.0 or better in courses attempted:
(a) since semester 1, 1992, or since admission to the university, for those subsequently admitted in accordance with clause 7.1, or
(b) since readmission to the university following first suspension, or subsequent suspension, under these regulations.
2.1 The Cumulative Grade Point Average is the sum of all grade points achieved since Semester 1, 1992 divided by the number of courses attempted.
2.2 For those admitted subsequent to Semester I, 1992, the CGPA is the sum of all grade points since the date of admission divided by the number of courses attempted.
2.3 For those suspended subsequent to Semester 1, 1992, the CGPA is the sum of all grade points since readmission, following first or subsequent suspension, divided by the number of courses attempted.
The Semester Grade Point Average is the sum of all grade points achieved in a particular semester divided by the number of courses attempted in that semester.
The Annual Grade Point Average is the sum of all grade points achieved in a particular year divided by the number of courses attempted in that year. In the event that a student repeats a course failed in the first semester, only the higher grade point achieved shall be included in the calculation of the Annual GPA.
In the event that a student repeats a course for whatever reason, only the higher grade achieved shall be included in the calculation of CGPA.
The following convention is used for converting letter grades to numerical values for the calculation of students’ CGPA, SGPA and AGPA:

The following grades shall not be included in the calculation of the GPA:
(a) a compassionate pass
(b) an aegrotat pass
(c) a cross credit
(d) a not completed grade (NC)
(e) the grade for EL001.
7.1 Initially students shall be assessed for satisfactory or unsatisfactory progress after they have attempted at least six courses.
7.2 Subsequently students shall be assessed on the basis of their CGPA annually.
7.3 Students who fail to maintain satisfactory progress (as defined in Clause 1 above) but have:
(a) a CGPA of at least 1.5 but below 2.0 will be put on probation for one year; or
(b) a CGPA of less than 1.5 will be suspended for one semester.
7.4 Students who at the end of their first probation:
(a) attain a CGPA of 2.0 or better will cease to be on probation
(b) fail to attain an AGPA of 2.0 or better will be suspended for one semester
(c) attain an AGPA of 2.0 or better, but fail to attain a CGPA of 2.0 or better, will remain on probation for a further year.
7.5 Students who at the end of their second probation fail to attain both an AGPA and a CGPA of 2.0 will be suspended for one semester.
7.6 Students who do not maintain satisfactory performance (as defined in Clause 1 above) after their first suspension will be suspended for two semesters.
7.7 Students who, after re-admission following their second suspension, fail to make satisfactory progress (as defined in Clause 1 above) will be excluded from the university indefinitely.
8.1 Students who have been excluded from the university under the Unsatisfactory Progress Regulations may appeal in writing using the Unsatisfactory Progress Appeal form to the Registrar or nominee or, in the case of students at Alafua Campus to the Campus Manager, or in the case of the students Emalus Campus to the Secretary. Students should appeal within fourteen days of the date of the university’s letter of notification of the decision. If in his or her opinion there are exceptional circumstances, the Vice-Chancellor may, direct that an appeal that has been lodged after the fourteen days shall be considered.
8.2 Students appealing shall be entitled to make submission in writing only setting out clearly the reasons, with appropriate supporting documents, why they should not be excluded from the university.
8.3 The Academic Standards and Quality Committee or the appropriate Committee at the Alafua or Emalus Campus shall consider such appeals. That committee may confirm the student’s suspension or exclusion, or waive it and allow the student to continue with his or her studies under such conditions as the relevant committee may consider necessary.
8.4 The decision of the Academic Standards and Quality Committee or the appropriate Committee at Alafua or Emalus Campus shall be final.
Students who are suspended or excluded from the university under the Academic Progress Assessment shall not, during the period of their suspension or exclusion, be permitted to register for credit courses offered by the university.
Persons who have been suspended under these regulations and who wish to apply for readmission to the university shall do so in writing to the Registrar or nominee at least four weeks before the commencement of a semester.
Postgraduate Studies
1.1 Coursework
Unsatisfactory progress for students undertaking coursework leading to the award of a postgraduate diploma or a master’s degree is defined as:
(a) failure to achieve a GPA of 2.00 or better after two courses have been attempted, or
(b) the award of two fail grades.
1.2 Thesis
Unsatisfactory progress for students undertaking work for a Thesis is defined as:
(a) for a master’s degree, failure of the student to re-enrol for the degree each semester until the thesis is submitted for examination, or
(b) for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy, failure to re-enrol for the degree each year until the thesis is submitted for examination, or
(c) failure to apply for suspension of study, or
(d) failure to make satisfactory progress as determined by the appropriate Faculty Postgraduate Committee. (In coming to such a decision the Faculty Postgraduate Committee shall take into account the thesis progress reports required of the student by clause 13.10 of the Master’s Degree Program Regulations of or clause 4.2 of the Program Regulations for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy), or
(e) failure to complete the requirements for the degree within the prescribed maximum time.
1.3 Supervised Research Project
Unsatisfactory progress for students undertaking work for a Supervised Research Project for a master’s degree is defined as:
(a) failure of the student to make satisfactory progress as determined by the appropriate Faculty Postgraduate Committee. (In coming to such a decision the Faculty Postgraduate Committee shall take into account the progress report required of the student by clause 13.10 of the Master’s Degree Program Regulations), or
(b) failure to complete the requirements of the Supervised Research Project within the prescribed maximum time.
1.4 In considering the progress reports required under 1.2(d) and 1.3(a) above, the Faculty Postgraduate Committee shall take into account:
(a) any special conditions attached to the student’s enrolment in the degree, and
(b) whether the student is a part-time or full-time student.
2.1 Coursework
Students undertaking coursework leading to the award of a postgraduate diploma or a master’s degree shall be assessed for satisfactory progress at the end of each semester in which they are enrolled.
2.2 Thesis.
Students undertaking work for a thesis leading to the award of a master’s degree or the degree of Doctor of Philosophy shall be assessed for satisfactory progress in accordance with 1.2(d) and 1.4 above.
2.3 Supervised Research Project
Students undertaking work for a Supervised Research Project leading to the award of the degree of Master shall be assessed for satisfactory progress in accordance with 1.3(a) and 1.4 above.
2.4 For students whose progress is deemed unsatisfactory the appropriate Faculty Postgraduate Committee may place the student on probation for a semester provided that:
(a) in the case of a student undertaking work for the Supervised Research Project or a thesis, the Faculty Postgraduate Committee shall require that student to make progress which it deems satisfactory by the end of the probationary semester,
(b) students whose work is deemed unsatisfactory for a second time shall be excluded from, and have their current enrolment in, postgraduate studies terminated.
The appeal procedures under the Academic Progress Assessment for Undergraduate Studies shall also apply to postgraduate students.
Students who are excluded from postgraduate studies under the provisions of these regulations shall not be permitted to re-enrol for the same program and in the same area of study from which they have been excluded.
