What is Land Management and Development?

Land Management and Development graduates are involved in all aspects of buying, developing, investing, managing, valuing and selling land and buildings in the Pacific region.

The nature of the Programme was changed at the end fo 2012 and now our students will be awarded a Bachelor in Commerce (Land Management)

The Bachelor in Commerce (Land Management and Development (B.Com LMD) degree provides a course of study in areas such as management, tenure, land use, valuation, investment and development of land and buildings, together with the economic, legal and technical factors that affect the ownership of land (both urban and rural) and buildings.

The Role of the Land Manager

The Managers are involved with all aspects of land and property management, development and administration.

Some land managers specialise in the valuation of real property. Even within the specialty a wide variety of challenges are encountered from the valuation of a single house to the feasibility of a tourism development project, the valuation of a plantation, a mining project, a shopping center or an industrial complex.

Some are involved in looking after other's land, such as the iTaukai Land Trust Board or as the property Manager for a company, or government which owns a substantial portfolio of properties. Another growth area for graduates is in property portfolio management with the larger financial institutions and superannuation funds.

Housing development and management is a field in which land managers have appropriate skills and many graduates are involved in planning and development in both the public and private sector.

Real estate agency, particularly the buying, selling leasing of commercial, retail and industrial properties is a field in which Land Managers are particularly well qualified. They are also involved in the design and implementation of property development projects. Land Managers are increasingly involved in computerised property management systems and Geographical Information Systems (GIS).

Land Managers need to be interested in people and their environment. They should like creative and analytical work and be able to communicate logically and effectively both orally and in writing. They must have the ability to communicate with other specialists.

For those who choose the valuation profession

The B.Com Land Management and Development degree is recognised by both the Valuers Registration Board and the Institute of Valuation and Estate Management of Fiji. After completion of two years approved practical experience graduates are eligible for registration as a Valuer and for Corporate membership of the Institute.

No-one except a Registered Valuer is allowed by law in Fiji to value property. The Land Management degree is the door through which would be Registered Valuers must pass.
