RED HAT Linux Training

International Open Source Network Pacific Islands Countries (IOSNPIC) is a consortium made up of following member organizations USP, PICISOC, SPC and SOPAC with their main goal being to promote Free Open Source Software among the Pacific Island Countries.

In light of achieving its goal, this year (2007) IOSN PIC is going to host Linux Training of Trainers in Tonga in late November.The course is targeted to help Pacific Island country institutions use Red Hat Linux Operating System (See below for particulars). The Training itself will not be charged and will be borne by IOSN-PIC. Per-diems to cover accommodation will be given to successful candidates outside of Tonga. Air Fares maybe subsidized depending on availability of funds.

RH130 Red Hat Linux Core System Administration

Objectives:

An operator who can perform system administration tasks to a level where user can install and configure and attach a new Red Hat Linux workstation to an existing network as well as deploy LAN services using RedHat.

Target audience:

Users who are new to Linux and have no prior UNIX or command-line skills, who want to develop and practice the basic skills to use and control their own Red hat Linux system or Red Hat Linux Computing Essentials RH030 or equivalent experience with Red Hat Linux.
Aims: Students will learn to be effective administrators of Linux systems, mastering tasks such as hardware and device configuration, file system management, user administration, network configurations, kernel services, attaching new Linux systems to a corporate network, configuring the new systems for end-users, and troubleshooting.

Course Outline

  • Install Red Hat Linux interactively and with Kickstart
  • Control common system hardware
  • Create and maintain the Linux filesystem
  • Configure an NFS client and autofs
  • Understand system and service initialization
  • Perform user and group administration
  • Integrate a workstation with an existing network running common network services
  • Configure a workstation as a client to NIS, DNS, and DHCP services
  • Administer the Linux printing subsystem
  • Automate tasks with at, cron, and anacron
  • Maintain and interpret system logs
  • Back up; filesystems to tape and tar archive
  • Install, update, query and remove software packages with RPM
  • Upgrade the Linux kernel via RPM
  • Configure the X Window System and the GNOME desktop environment
  • Perform basic performance, memory, and process management
  • Configure basic host security
  • Perform basic troubleshooting
  • Performance-based Assessment and Testing
  • Workshop in setting up LAN services (DNS, email, ftp, web server, samba file sharing)
