Labasa students participate in Inter-tertiary 2012
The inter-tertiary for 2012 was hosted by the Fiji University Sports Association (FUSA).
The event was schedule from the 20th to 22nd of September with USP hosting the event. USP Labasa Students Association participated in three events, rugby, soccer and netball comprising of 50 students altogether travelling to Viti Levu for the games.
The teams were billed at Nasese Hall for the seven days and catering for themselves throughout the duration of their stay. The Cakaudrove, Bua, Macuata (CBM) Students Association in Laucala welcomed the USP students from the north with a Sevusevu (traditional Fijian greetings) and dinner on their arrival. The northern students shared grog with their counterparts in Laucala Campus and familiarize themselves with each other. The students also presented their sevusevu to the church minister who looks after the Nasese Church Hall.
On Thursday morning all was eager to wake up early since it was the first day of inter-tertiary, the soccer and netball teams had their matches lined up for the day, however rugby was scheduled to the second day, Friday.
It was unfortunate the netball and soccer teams lost all their matches, but there was a high hope for the rugby team to fly the Labasa campus flag. Alas, they could not make it to the elimination rounds.
The USP Student Association Laucala executives visited them in the evening and guided the northern students on USPSA code of conduct which was crucial during their stay.
The awards night was held at the FMF Foods Ltd gymnasium where almost all students do not want to miss. They enjoyed themselves socializing with other students from various tertiary institutions around Fiji that was present on the night.
Sunday was a Sabbath for most of the students, preparation for the farewell ceremony followed after the church service and lunch. The traditional parting (tatau) was presented to the church minister, USP Laucala students, CBM student association and the USPSA executives in the evening. The gifts from Vanua Levu were also presented which include coconut oil and sasa brooms.
The students depart Suva for Vanua Levu at 4am in the morning with a wonderful and learning experience. Apart from taking part in the event it was an opportune time for students to enjoy themselves as well as visiting families and friends.
