Mission Statement "To advance the university mission by providing equitable regional access to excellent library and information services, resources and facilities to students, faculty and the wider Pacific community to enable them to become lifelong learners."

 

The Main Library of the University of the South Pacific based at Laucala Campus, was first established in 1969, a year after the University was founded in 1968. The current three-storey building was opened in 1988 with funding from the Australian Government.

 

It has an area of 6,500 square metres and 950 seats for readers. The USP Library network, comprising 22 libraries that are located across the USP member countries offers more than 1 million books, 7000 e-books, 40,000 full text titles accessible via multidisciplinary databases with 24/7 access from the Library website, and over 300 print serial subscriptions.

There is a special collection of materials relating to the Pacific Islands in the Pacific Collection.

 

Separate from the Main Library is a Lower Campus Library which currently houses the PIMRIS collection.

 

Campus and Centre Libraries have also been established in all the twelve USP member countries: Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. There are also eight Centre Libraries.

 

The Main Library and Alafua Campus Library use the Library of Congress Classification system. The Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme is used for the general collection at the Emalus Campus Library, and the other Campus and Centre libraries. The Moys Classification Scheme is used for the law collection at Emalus Campus Library.

 

The Main Library uses the Spydus integrated library system. The database currently consists of 1 million records. The Athena system is used at many of the other Campus libraries.
