The Agricultural Chemistry Laboratory is located at The University of the South Pacific’s Alafua campus in Samoa. Its main purpose is to run practical classes and support research projects for university students and lecturers in agronomy, crop protection and animal production. The laboratory also plays a major role in assisting Year 13 students from schools across Samoa with their Internal Assessment studies.
An affordable Soil, Plant and Animal Feed Analysis Service is provided for farmers, MAF extension officers and external organizations by the Agricultural Chemistry Laboratory.
Soil analysis allows farmers to manage nutrient input requirements, thereby minimizing waste, increasing soil organic matter and improving sustainability. Plant analysis may be useful when crops show signs of nutrient deficiency. Animal feed analysis information helps farmers provide stock with a balanced diet of protein, fat, carbohydrate and minerals for optimal growth.
Lecturers in the School of Agriculture and Food Technology are familiar with the characteristics of South Pacific island soils and local agricultural production systems, including organic farming. The School is committed to sharing its expertise with the wider community. An overview of the range of research carried out at the campus is given in the USP Alafua publication summary.
The USP Alafua Agricultural Chemistry Laboratory is the only certified Australasian Soil and Plant Analysis Council (ASPAC) laboratory in Samoa. Certification in the analysis of soil and plant elements is achieved by completing three rounds of proficiency testing, carried out by LabCheck, each year. Through its membership of the South Pacific Agricultural Chemistry Laboratory Network (SPACNET), the Laboratory has access to soil and plant analysis advice for the development of sustainable agricultural systems in the South Pacific.
