Science Programme Receives Boost
Tuesday 23 Oct 2007: The Kiribati Campus is pleased to announce that it has been award $2170 by the AusAID Kiribati Small Grants Scheme in the latest round. The grant will be used to purchase prepared slides and animal specimens for use in the Campus science laboratory.
The equipment will enhance and extend the practical laboratory work of the Campus science programme, especially the 100 level degree units; BI 102 (Plant Biology), BI 104 (Molecular Biology) and BI 108 (Animal Biology). Science students will now be able to complete the full 12 practical labs for all 100 level units at the Campus.
Mr Dako Nating, the science lecturer at the Campus said, "The slides and animal specimens will allow our students and others doing science in Kiribati to better prepare for their future scientific studies and develop more advance scientific practical skills".
The equipment will also be employed at the USP Nauru Centre where Mr Nating visits to conduct science practical laboratories as well as in the College of Foundation Studies programmes conducted at Kiribati high schools.
The Campus would like to thank AusAID and the Kiribati Small Grants Scheme Programme Manager for their support. The cost of transporting the equipment to Kiribati, $640 was provided by the Campus as part of the local contribution to the development of scientific practical and research skills in Kiribati.
