First Open Day and “Everyday Chinese” Launch by Confucius Institute at USP

On May 2nd, the Confucius Institute at the University of the South Pacific (CI-USP) successfully held its first Open Day and launched the Chinese language Radio program (Everyday Chinese) on Radio Pasifik. More than 40 guests including the Pro-Chancellor and Chair of Council Mr. Ikbal Jannif, Vice-Chancellor of USP Professor Rajesh Chandra, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Law and Education, outstanding scholars, professors and other USP staff attended the function.

At 9:30, the CI Building Tour triggered the Open Day. All the guests were guided on the visit to the teaching and office building. When they came to the Culture Experiencing Machine and the Sound Dictionary, all the guests listened carefully to the introduction by the teacher and student. The VC excitedly tried the machines himself and responded enthusiastically to the introducers. After the student who was show casing the session introduced herself in fluent Chinese, a bright smile was on VC’s face.  Moving to the students’ works exhibition area, guests were surprised by various students’ works such as Chinese character writing, painting, stitch, paper-cuttings and tea ceremony demonstration.

 

Half an hour later, the ceremony was held on the deck outside the CI building. The Dean of Faculty of Arts, Language and Education of USP, Dr. Akanisi Kedrayate, delivered a welcome address first.  Later, the VC was invited to present a speech in which he acknowledged the hard work and great achievement made by the CI staff members and emphasized the importance of learning Chinese given China’s rising political and economic position. . He also encouraged the other schools to use the advanced technology in teaching, used by the Confucius Institute, so that the students would benefit. His great affection for the CI and his confidence in building a first-class Confucius Institute was revealed in his words. 

 

Then, the foreign director of CI-USP Ms. Joan Yee made a speech to introduce the currently-opened classes like credit course, social class, staff class and cultural workshops. Ms. Joan Yee, as University Librarian, also received more than 500 CI donated books and video materials to USP Library from the Chinese director of CI-USP Professor Denggui Li. 

 

Finally, the VC cut the ribbon, launching the Chinese language radio program named “Everyday Chinese” on Radio Pasifik accompanied by Ms. Joan Yee and Professor Denggui Li. The station manager of Pasifik Radio, Mr. Semi Francis, said that the program marked the first Chinese language radio program in Fiji broadcasting history.
