Transformative Pedagogies: Crossing Boundaries
The following is an example of classroom teaching using the Development Work Research (DWR) theory of John-Steiner (1985) and Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory (1978). UU114 is a university course that most learners enrolling at USP take as their first course. It is the only Academic Skills course offered at USP. Over the years, the course has been revised and offered by modes that suit most of the learners. Early this year, a group of mature i-Taukei students were sponsored for a flexi school at the Laucala campus. Information on the learners’ first language and profession, their need to successfully complete the course, their computer and academic skills knowledge, and their inclination towards collaborative learning meant that the course needed to be taught with a different approach, that using DWR and Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory. The students’ performance during the course is discussed. The results from the course suggest that transformative pedagogies lead to success provided the dichotomies such as ICT, education and workplace, and individual and collective learning are kept in mind.
