The School of Law offers programs and courses in law at undergraduate level and at post-graduate level. At one time, the School offered programs at sub-degree level, certificates and diplomas, but these have been discontinued as from 2009.

Students are encouraged to come to study on Emalus campus where the largest collection of law reports and law texts are held, where most of the law staff are situated and there is face-to face tuition of all courses by staff, and where there is interaction also with other students and a stimulating and supportive campus life. Experience has shown that students achieve best results where they undertake study face-to face with their teachers, and with the support of their peers. Face to face teaching has been provided on Laucala Campus, Suva, for the first year courses, but after that courses must be studied at Emalus Campus or online.

Sometimes work or family commitments or financial constraints make study on Emalus Campus not possible, and so almost all of the courses in the law programs have been developed for presentation online via Moodle, and so may be studied at a distance. Extensive written course materials have been prepared and are available in print form and online. Where distance students are studying near a USP Centre there may also be available a local tutor.

During the mid-year and the end-of-year breaks, intensive teaching is offered by way of flexi-schools. These usually provide intensive teaching of established courses which are normally taught over one whole semester, but some times special topics which are not in the normal curriculum are offered by specialists who are not established members of staff but come to provide tuition in a course of their specialty.

The School adopts a variety of methods of instruction including lectures and tutorials, seminar presentations, team and individual legal research exercises, essays, legal drafting exercises, debating, moot court sessions, law clinic simulations, and participation in a Community Legal Centre operated by the School. The Community Legal Centre provides final year students enrolled in the Law Clinic program with an opportunity to work in a legal office based at the Emalus campus, with real clients referred by the Public Solicitor’s Office of Vanuatu.
