Change in program name

Category: SSS News

The transfer of Applied Psychology from the School of Education to the recently formed School of Social Sciences earlier this year has brought about a change in program name and considerable changes to the program structure.

PS312: Group Process class, semester 1 2006

The transfer of Applied Psychology from the School of Education to the recently formed School of Social Sciences earlier this year has brought about a change in program name and considerable changes to the program structure.

Applied Psychology has been renamed Psychology. The rational behind this is to avoid any misperception of what is being offered. While an applied emphasis is strongly maintained in the teaching of psychology courses, the title “applied psychology” is sometime interpreted (incorrectly) to indicate a clinical orientation. The amended title helps to avoid this misperception.

The Certificate in Counselling and Guidance has been renamed the Certificate in Basic Counselling. The certificate course is an introduction to counselling. However, some individuals, governments and non-government organisations mistakenly assume this certificate represents a “license to practice”. The amended name, “Certificate in Basic Counselling” is designed to minimize this misperception. The Certificate consists of six courses. Further information on the certificate can be found in the Courses link.

In addition, the BA in Psychology, (single & double major, and minor) and the Postgraduate Diploma in Psychology, have undergone some minor structural changes. Further information on the BA and Postgraduate programs can be found in the Courses link.
