Abstract:
Research indicates that children learn best in an environment which allows them to explore, discover, and play. It is closely tied to the development of cognitive, socio-emotional, and physical behaviors. The United Nations has acknowledged play as ‘the right of the child to rest and leisure, to engage in play and recreational activities appropriate to the age of the child’ (Article 31 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child). In this context, play is equated more with recreational activity, and its importance to children’s overall learning and development is overlooked. This talk aims to probe what exactly does it mean to play and why is play so important for young children?
