FUTURE PROSPECT

Labasa Campus aims to achieve the following by 2009

  • Completion of a full range of programmes (from pre-degree to Postgraduate programmes) through a mixture of DFL mode, face to face teaching through USPNet.

  • Strengthening and formalising of Continuing Education Programme (national) and special emphasis on the vocational aspect of the programmes

  • Establishment of special projects (such as training and workshops), research and consultation in special areas like sustainable development, forestry, fisheries, tourism, sugar industry and relevant government departments.

The ability of the Labasa Campus to accommodate all the aims stipulated above will be dependent on the existing rented space. Given the context of Labasa, purchasing a piece of land seems to be the best option in the long term development of the Centre. The land areas that were initially identified for possible developments have all been taken up. The advisory committee has made a special submission to USP management to consider the proposal by the landowner and developer Mr Paula Rakabikabi.  This proposal comprises a 9 acre land which is conveniently located within the Labasa Business District.

Strategic Achievements by the Campus

Generally, all our objectives were successfully achieved and despite low economic activities in the North we are still able to maintain our momentum and significantly our distinctive service. The Savusavu Study Centre, the first of its kind in the region brings different challenges and dimensions to our general access and flexibility.

The newly established Savusavu Study Centre is a self funded project by the Labasa Campus in consultation with its Advisory Committee.

Our commitment in providing tutorial support and conducting workshops on basic writing and Study skills (with the support of CELT), time management etc to our remote students has been a success.

The Centre provides 25 tutorial sessions every week as part of its commitment towards DFL support services.

The trienial meetings of the Advisory Committee in 2004 have been fruitful

The Centre has established a cohort of management students from Government Departments, NGOs and Industries.  It has also established a cohort of mature students from Post Fiji and FIRCA in selective foundation courses.

The Centre in consultation with ITS Laucala, has increased its bandwidth from 64kbps to 128kbps.

Additional exam Centres have been established in Taveuni, Qamea Island and Wailevu West.
