Language Services Centre

The Language Services Centre (LSC) was established in 2006 as part of the School of Language, Arts and Media, to respond to a demand for services in a range of languages from individuals, businesses, government departments, NGOs and tertiary institutions.

Our services include:

• the English Language Upgrading Course (ELUC), a semester-long immersion course for beginners in English, offered twice a year
• translation in various languages, including Fijian, Hindi, French, Rotuman, Tongan, Tuvaluan, Samoan, Tokelauan, Kiribati, Solomon Islands Pijin, Bislama (Vanuatu), Tok Pisin (PNG)
• interpretation: simultaneous and consecutive
• translation and interpretation training workshops (Fijian, Hindi, French)
• private tuition in various languages, including Fijian, French, Hindi, Kiribati, Nauruan, English
• individualised private tuition in general English upgrading skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing)
• tailor-made workshops in English for academic purposes, English for special purposes, including specific language and communication skills, particularly for the workplace: eg report writing, seminar presentation, writing for the media, pronunciation and voice coaching, cross-cultural communication
• preparation workshops for IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
• non-credit language courses, with certificates in elementary Fijian, Fiji Hindi, French
• editing (English, Fijian, Hindi, French)
• transcription of video- and audio-recorded data (in a Pacific language, English or French)
• linguistic data checking
• compilation and transcription of language corpora
• language examination moderation
• evaluation and certification of language proficiency

These services are delivered by consultants and members of SLAM’s staff, who have expertise in a wide variety of language-related fields.
