Learn English in Fiji!
Study at USP.
The Language Services Centre of the School of Language, Arts and Media offers the English Language Upgrading Course (ELUC), designed for people with a limited knowledge of English who plan to undertake studies through the medium of English or simply want to broaden their knowledge and learn to communicate in English. The course has been designed specifically for students of English as a foreign language and targets the development of all four language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking.
ELUC is a 24-week course offered twice a year, normally from January to June and from July to December. It is a full-time course, with classes running Monday to Friday, from 9am to 4pm.
Learning activities take place both inside and outside the classroom. The daily routine usually starts with a discussion of the news, using a daily Fiji newspaper as a jumping-off point. Classes are small and students are given individual attention by an experienced teacher. There are also field trips, which in the past have included visits to the Eco Kula Park, the Fiji Museum, and the Arts Village in Pacific Harbour.
At the end of the course, students sit the IELTS examination, and are given certificates at a special award ceremony.
The course attracts a cosmopolitan range of students. In the recent past we have had students from Nigeria, Finland, Russia, East Timor, Korea, China, Japan, Wallis and Futuna, New Caledonia, and Turkey.
Once they complete the course, some students will join regional organisations requiring a command of English while others will study in an English-medium institution or return to their home countries.
The next ELUC course will start on 5 July 2010 and end on 17 December 2010. The fees are F$6000 and include:
- full tuition fees
- all course materials
- daily newspaper
- full USP student privileges
- the IELTS examination (International English Language Testing System)
- field trips
To register, download from www.usp.ac.fj or get from Ms Mary Leano an application for admission to the undergraduate programs. Fill it in and return it to the LSC, attention Ms Mary Leano, with two passport photographs, a certified photocopy of your highest qualification and a certified copy of your passport.
Note: To be eligible for ELUC you must have completed High School. Admission to ELUC does not guarantee admission to USP degree studies.
