How To Apply

How Do I Apply for Admission?

Before you submit any form to USP, please check that:

  • you meet the admission criteria for the program for which you are applying (if applicable)
  • your qualifications (formal and non-formal) and work experience are clearly stated (if applicable)
  • you have included all the certified documentary evidence required to support your application
  • you have passed the prerequisites for any course for which you are applying
  • you have clearly indicated your correct postal and telephone contact details so that you can be advised promptly of the outcome of your application.
  1. New students

You are considered a new student if you have not studied at any USP campus (or what used to be called USP Centre, or Sub-centre) before, or have been offered a place in a USP program in a previous semester but did not actually register for any courses.

You are required to submit an 'Application for Admission to an Undergraduate Program' or an 'Application for Admission to an Postgraduate Program' form to the campus where you want to study.

  2. CONTINUING students

You are considered a continuing student if you were registered for courses at USP last semester.

You are required to submit a Registration form to the campus where you want to study, or, if you are a Laucala Campus student, to register online using Student Online Services (SOLS).

Note: If you were registered for courses last semester, but you wish to change campus in the coming semester, or you completed your program and you wish to start a different one, you are a resuming student (see below).

  3. RESUMING STUDENTS

You are considered a resuming student if you had been studying through a particular USP campus last semester and now wish to enrol at a different USP campus, or completed a program of study last semester and would now like to be admitted to a different program, or were registered for courses at USP in an earlier semester but have been put on academic suspension, or were registered for courses at USP in an earlier semester but stopped your studies for reasons other than academic suspension.

You are required to submit an 'Application for Admission to an Undergraduate Program' or an 'Application for Admission to an Postgraduate Program' form to the campus where you want to study.

DEADLINES

All applications are due on:

Registration in Courses:

The deadline for registration forms varies, as some campuses encourage continuing students either to register online or 'pre-enrol' before the face-to-face registration period, even though payment of fees may not take place until a little later. Contact your local campus for information about the local registration deadlines.

Programmes

What Programmes are Offered at USP?

USP campuses around the region offer programmes and courses at all academic levels, ranging from informal courses up to PhD programmes. At the community level, campuses offer not-for-credit courses according to local needs and resources. In addition some formal continuing and community education programmes are offered through distance and flexible learning. To be eligible for admission for such programmes you must have completed the equivalent of Form 4 education.

College of Foundation Studies programmes include Preliminary and Foundation programmes. The former are aimed at mature entrants who have left school early but who now wish to re-commence studying, and at those with margin fail grades in Form 6 examinations. Foundation programmes, which provide a pathway to degree-level study, are for those who have been successful in Form 6 examinations.

USP offers more than 21 certificate programmes. Many of these programmes require the completion of only six courses. Generally admission to certificates is on the basis of an overall pass in Form 6, plus a year's relevant work experience, or alternatively, as a mature entrant with relevant work experience.

USP offers more than 28 diploma programmes, which normally require the completion of up to ten courses. Generally admission to diplomas is on the basis of an overall pass in Form 7, or an overall pass in Form 6 plus two years' relevant work experience, or as a mature entrant with relevant work experience.

USP offers nine Bachelor's degree programmes. Apart from the Bachelor of Education, admission to bachelor's degrees is usually on the basis of passing Form 7 or completing a Foundation Certificate, and most bachelor's degrees require passes at that level in specific subjects. For the BEd, only qualified teachers are admitted.

The postgraduate programmes USP offer include: Graduate Certificates, Postgraduate Certificates and Postgraduate Diplomas plus Master's Degrees. USP also offers the Doctor of Philosophy degree.

Criteria

What Are the Criteria for Admission to USP?

USP's admission criteria differ according to the level and type of program you are applying for as well as whether you are under 23 years of age or a mature entrant. Applicants under the age of 23 are admitted to USP on the basis of their school leaving qualifications, while for mature entrants their work experience and any tertiary courses completed since leaving school may also be considered.

In addition USP requires all new students taking undergraduate degree-level courses to sit an English proficiency test called ELSA (English Language Skills Assessment). The purpose of the ELSA test is to determine that all students have the English language skills needed for successful university study. Students who fail the ELSA test will be required to pass EL001 before registering for any 200-level courses.
