Designing effective assessments for DFL courses

Participants at a CFDL workshop
CFDL facilitated a half day workshop on the 16th of September on designing effective assessment strategies for Distance & Flexible Learning (DFL) courses. The workshop drew participants from the 3 faculties of the University and covered varieties of effective assessment strategies such as constructive alignment, formative and summative assessment, authentic assessment, assessment criteria, weighting and rubrics and strategies to reduce plagiarism.
While opening the workshop, Dr. Theresa Koroivulaono, Acting Co-director of CFDL, hoped that the participants would find the workshop interesting and thought provoking. The workshop engaged participants in sharing their experiences on assessment and how authentic assessment strategies could enhance learning and teaching processes.
The participants were reminded that the level of learning the students acquired depended on the type of assessments and to reduce plagiarism the challenge was to design assessments that did not encourage plagiarism.
