Dreaming quality, singing relevance and performing sustainability: An evening with CFDL

One of the performances during the USP
Strategic Plan 2010-2012 showcase
The Centre for Flexible & Distance Learning shared an evening with Senior Management and several sections of the university on Thursday, 26th November to showcase learning objects developed on the six priority areas of the USP Strategic Plan 2010-2012.
All the staff of CFDL participated for six weeks in a Moodle course entitled, USP Plan: 2010-2012 USP Strategic Plan, the first of its kind at USP, also expanding for the first time, the use of Moodle @ USP from learning and teaching to professional development. At USP, Moodle has been used predominantly for supporting learning and teaching. However, at other universities particularly the Open University in the United Kingdom Moodle is being used not only for learning and teaching but is also used as a ‘one-stop shop’ by academics for administrative purposes, research, collaborative partnerships, staff development and as a student data base for storing assessment results and student information.
The SP course had 3 online assignments and one face to face which was presented in the form of learning objects on the evening . The first assignment required each team to write a 2 sentence summary explaining their Priority Area, objectives and strategies in the CFDL context; in the second a concept map was required showing each group’s interpretation of their PA and in assignment number 3, the groups were asked to produce a collage and a paragraph articulating their ‘dream’ for how they saw their PA developing in the USP context. The presentations and performances were evaluated and awarded prizes in different categories serving the same function as examinations at the end of the semester and the awards for excellent scholarship at graduation.
Prizes were awarded for: the best assignment submitted within the deadline, the most innovative assignment, the best performance, the most motivated and best team, most active discussion forum, and the best learning object. Although the Camtasia group (Maraia Lesuma, Anare Tuitoga, Ethel Varea, Sera Rokodi, Yogesh Nath, Evan Naqiolevu and Niseta Buatava) won the best learning object, everyone came out winners ending their 2009 experience on a high note.
CFDL acknowledges the following people who contributed to the event, Apete Marayawa (FAL) for assisting with light design and set construction, Irish Lal, Niten Goundar and Anand Raju (ITS) for sound and multimedia support and Apisai Marayawa, Samuela Tale and Jone Waqatabua for assisting with the set construction.
