The programs offered by the School of Economics are designed to provide students with a detailed knowledge of theoretical and applied economics. The degree is designed for individuals who seek to become professional economists or to pursue graduate or professional school.
The degree program core consists of parallel series of macroeconomics and microeconomics courses. At the third year, particular emphasis is placed on applying theory to developing countries. Quantitative economics is of major and increasing importance and courses in economic statistics and econometrics are offered to those who wish to develop expertise in this area of economics. Students expecting to study economics at the graduate level should consult with the economics faculty to develop necessary quantitative skills.
The ultimate aims of the degree program are to provide both a stimulation introduction to the nature of economics and economic problems, and a thorough training in specific skills that are in great demand in the public sector, international agencies, and private industry and commerce.

Students intending to proceed to postgraduate study in economics are strongly advised to include EC301, EC302 and EC303 in their Bachelor of Commerce program as EC401, EC402 and EC403 are compulsory courses for the Postgraduate Diploma.
The school also offers courses in Official Statistics (OS) leading to a Certificate, Diploma, Degree and Postgraduate Diploma.
The School of Economics provides an outstanding and helpful environment for students to do their Masters or PhD work. We currently offer fourteen courses at the postgraduate level. Course offerings cover a broad range of topics in theoretical and applied economics. In all cases admission is at the discretion of the Faculty and Business and Economics postgraduate committee - a 'B' average at undergraduate level is the minimum qualification for consideration for admission. Timing of courses depends on the specific requirements of students and the availability of staff. 1. Postgraduate Diploma in Economics consists of four courses: EC401: Macroeconomic Analysis EC402: Microeconomic Analysis EC403: Econometrics EC404: Economic Growth and Development 2. Master of Commerce in Economics. (a). Option One (thesis or SRP): Postgraduate Diploma in Economics and a thesis. OR Postgraduate Diploma in Economics plus two postgraduate courses in economics and a supervised research project. (b). Option two (coursework): Postgraduate Diploma in Economics plus four postgraduate courses in economics. 3. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). PhD is the premier research degree of the School. It is a original thesis and shall not normally exceed (including notes and bibliography)100,000 words in length.
