Global Change and Coral Reef Management Capacity in the Pacific: Engaging Scientists and Policy Makers in Fiji, Samoa, Tuvalu and Tonga Project (2010-2011)

This project aims to bring Pacific Leaders together with scientists and experts on the sustainable management of coral reefs, so that they can be apprised of the impacts of global change and of those factors that are affecting the health of their coral reefs, using the most recent information available. The countries involved are Fiji, Samoa, Tuvalu and Tonga. Workshops will be held in each of the countries, facilitated by the Institute of Marine Resources, and the PACE-SSD/START Oceania Secretariat together with contact persons in each of the Governments. The 2-day workshops will comprise presentations and discussions between coral reef/climate change scientists and government decision and policy makers. Follow-up visits in the second year by IMR and PACE-SD/START Oceania staff will be used to measure progress following the outcomes of the workshops.

Fiji Blue Prawns (2005- ongoing)

The Institute of Marine Resources has operated and managed the Dairy Farms Fiji- Freshwater Prawn Farm in Calia, Navua since 2005. The average annual production has been about 16.8 tons. In addition, the hatchery located at the University of the South Pacific's Marine Studies complex, supplies prawn post-larvae exclusively to DFF, and is operated and managed by IMR and Division of Marine Studies staff.

Marine Turtle Conservation in Fiji (2007- 2008); (GEF: 2008- 2011)

The marine turtle project focused on implementing marine turtle community based conservation by integrating awareness and research techniques with the targeted goal of restoring the sea turtle population in the region. Through the formulation of partnerships and networking communities and other individuals and organizations, IMR has strengthened conservation and capacity building where marine turtle conservation is concerned. Under the new GEF funded project which focuses in the Mamanuca group, community and resort consultations have been conducted. Nesting beach surveys and community awareness is planned for December 08-January 09.
